Sometimes my mom is able to help us out, but we usually decide to leave a table of Halloween freebies out while we trick or treat in our neighborhood as a family. Our daughter will only be a young kid for a few years, so we'd rather have a great time together while we can!
We don't leave a candy bowl at our front door because we're on a cul-de-sac and have a long driveway. We find that we get a lot more trick or treaters when we put a table up by the road.
Some of our neighbors do the same, even if they're personally at the table. It saves kids time (so they can visit more houses) and keeps adults from opening the door 172 times so everyone is happy.
While I'm sharing my Halloween habits, I have to confess that I actually don't leave out a big bowl of candy.
Instead, we leave out light up Halloween party favors like glow sticks, light up wands, illuminated "glasses" and headbands, and light up rings. Based on how many we put out and how many we always see around the neighborhood, they're a hit.

It's always dark as kids are wrapping up and we don't have many street lights, so it helps keep everyone safe. We also put out bottles of water, which are very popular. They go great with another neighbor's fresh hot boiled peanuts!

You can print your Halloween porch sign on regular printer paper, but for a more durable sign I recommend using white cardstock.
For best results, place your treat sign in a frame so it's easier to display. (Propping it against the candy bowl is unlikely to last the night.)
