The legend of St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is an old holiday with a lengthy history.

St. Patrick's Day occurs on March 17 each year. St. Patrick is the primary patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Ireland.

Although his exact birth date is unknown, St. Patrick lived in the mid-5th century.

He was born in Britain and was captured by Irish raiders when he was a teen. He was held in slavery in Ireland for six years.

This time in captivity strengthened his faith and he eventually ran away after dreaming that a ship was ready to help him escape.

He later returned to Ireland as a missionary and spent the rest of his life serving this mission. He is said to have died on March 17, 461, which is why St. Patrick's Day is March 17. (You can discover more about St. Patrick here.)

Many of the legends surrounding St. Patrick sprung up after his death, but these stories are part of the legend of St. Patrick and his holiday.

St. Patrick's Day celebrations began about 500 years after his death and the first documented St. Patrick's Day parade took place in (what is now) the United States in 1601!

How to use number coloring pages

These color by number sheets are an easy way to help early learners practice their colors, numbers, sight words, and fine motor skills. This set of color by number sheets includes numbers 1-10.

If your child or student can’t recognize their color words yet, you can circle the crayons with the correct color or color the tip of the crayon image to make a key. This will help your child learn their color words and help with color recognition skills.

Please excuse any off colors in the photos in this post. I work using blue blockers and keep my computer screen very red. When I change the temperature setting to "normal" to edit pictures, everything looks really weird to me because I'm so accustomed to the red shift. 😅

These free color by number pages are designed for younger kids. They feature numbers up to 10, so they're best suited to kindergarten aged students.

Some first grade students will not find these challenging enough to be engaging, but other first graders will love them. It depends on your child or student's level and interests. Pre-K children who love counting and numbers may enjoy these color by number pages, too.

Our favorite inexpensive markers are Crayola Super Tips. Their fine points can color the smaller areas in these color-by-number worksheets with ease.

I prefer to color with Prismacolor pencils. They are creamy and delightful to color with. I believe in supplying children with high-quality materials, whenever possible, so my daughter uses my Prismacolors, too.

I like to have children color in the white spaces with a white or slightly off white pencil or crayon. This demonstrates that the sections were intentionally colored and not unintentionally left blank.

One image shows a leprechaun face and has a color labeled "skin." We like to use the Crayola Colors of the Word crayons for a wide range of skin tones.
