The legend of St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is an old holiday with a lengthy history.
St. Patrick's Day occurs on March 17 each year. St. Patrick is the primary patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Ireland.
Although his exact birth date is unknown, St. Patrick lived in the mid-5th century. He was born in Britain and was captured by Irish raiders when he was a teen. He was held in slavery in Ireland for six years. This time in captivity strengthened his faith and he eventually ran away after dreaming that a ship was ready to help him escape.
He later returned to Ireland as a missionary and spent the rest of his life serving this mission. He is said to have died on March 17, 461, which is why St. Patrick's Day is March 17. (You can discover more about St. Patrick here.)
Many of the legends surrounding St. Patrick sprung up after his death. For example, it appears that the story of him driving the snakes out of Ireland and using the native Irish shamrock to teach about Trinity began about 200 years after his death. Today these stories are part of the legend of St. Patrick and his holiday.
St. Patrick's Day celebrations began about 500 years after his death and the first documented St. Patrick's Day parade took place in (what is now) the United States in 1601!

Please excuse any off colors in the photos in this post. I work using blue blockers and keep my computer screen very red. When I change the temperature setting to "normal" to edit pictures, everything looks really weird to me because I'm so accustomed to the red shift. 😅

I prefer to color with Prismacolor pencils. They are creamy and delightful to color with. I believe in supplying children with high-quality materials, whenever possible, so my daughter uses my Prismacolors, too.

I like to have children color in the white spaces with a white or slightly off white pencil or crayon. This demonstrates that the sections were intentionally colored and not unintentionally left blank.
One image shows a leprechaun face and has a color labeled "skin." We like to use the Crayola Colors of the Word crayons for a wide range of skin tones.
