What is May Day?
May Day is an old traditional English holiday.
It's the mid-point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice and when the signs of spring are finally arriving in the British Isles. Children would dance around the May pole, weaving ribbons as they went and people would cut flowers and spring branches to bring greenery indoors.
Other traditions, such as appointing a May Queen and putting on plays, were also popular during the Middle Ages and early modern period.
Today in the United States, one of the main May Day traditions is creating a "May Basket" with flowers. A May Basket is usually filled with flowers and left at someone's door anonymously.
This free printable for May Day is a fun activity for kindergarten and 1st grade students. Some second grade students could benefit from it, as well, depending on their current level and needs.
