    Simple Forest Food Web Worksheets

    Published: Jul 31, 2026

    • Share

Today, I’m excited to share a set of easy forest food web and food chain printables.

These cut-and-paste worksheets are designed for kindergarten and early elementary students to make learning about forest ecosystems interactive, engaging, and fun.

Learning about how ecosystems work is a fundamental part of elementary science.

Explaining the food web and food chain from primary producers up to consumers and apex predators can be a bit abstract for kids. That’s why hands-on, visual activities are the absolute best way to teach these concepts.

    Supplies Needed

You don’t need anything fancy to complete this activity. You likely already have everything in your craft cart!

    • The printed worksheets. I recommend printing on regular paper. Card stock is too thick for this one
    • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
    • Kid-safe scissors

What’s Included in the Forest Web & Chain Set

This printable pack includes two different activities that build upon each other.

Don't worry - an answer key is included to help!

Here's a preview of all three pages included in your PDF:

The Simple Forest Food Chain Owl Craft

This is such a fun, interactive craft! Kids will start by coloring the individual pieces: a caterpillar, leaves, a bird, and an owl.

After cutting them out along the dotted lines, they'll need to figure out the correct order of the food chain.

Once they have the sequence down, they glue the cut-outs onto a super cute foldable owl head! When folded along the dotted lines, it creates a fun little interactive booklet showing the flow of energy along the food chain.

You can see the completed owl head craft in action in this quick video clip. You'll note that the panels need to be folded "accordion style."

Forest Food Web Cut & Paste Worksheet

This page is a bit more advanced and perfect a more complex forest food web.

It features a web of arrows showing energy transfer and a set of picture tiles including a deer, bear, owl, beetle, grass, snake, bird, squirrel, and acorns.

Your child will color and cut out the pictures, then place each one in the correct position on the web. The instructions remind them to start with the producers (like the grass and acorns!) and then add the consumers.

(Please note that the image below is slightly different from what's in your PDF - I changed the beetle image because my daughter thought it looked too much like a tick.)

Forest Food Web Vocabulary to Discuss

While your kids are busy coloring and cutting, it's a great time to introduce or review some key science vocabulary!

Here are a few terms that pair perfectly with these worksheets:

    • Producer: Living things that make their own food using sunlight. In our forest printables, the grass and acorns represents the producers.
    • Consumer: Animals that have to eat other plants or animals to get their energy.
    • Apex Predator: An animal at the very top of the food chain that doesn't have any natural predators (like the bear!).
    • Food Chain: A straight line showing how energy passes from one living thing to another.
    • Food Web: A connected diagram showing how multiple food chains interact in one habitat.
