This three day, hands-on class will teach you timber framing techniques with both hand tools and power tools. Tools will be provided - you only need to bring yourself and your favorite pair of work gloves

On the final day, you'll have the unique opportunity to experience the community of an old-fashioned "barn raising" when you help classmates assemble and raise a timber frame woodshed that is scribed to stone.

Bonus pergola plans are included in the class so you can make your own at home!

A hot, home cooked lunch will be provided each day. Classes run Friday-Sunday and will be held from 9 am to 4 pm.

    Meet Your Teacher

Classes will be led by Angel. Angel has attended both Heartwood School of Timber Framing and studied under Japanese-style timber framer Josh Stephens, aka Mr. Chickadee.

Angel will be supported by his wife, Natasha.

Angel has designed and built multiple timber frame structures, including a "she shed" home office that came through Helene unscathed.

This 30 second video shows you a quick look at that project from start to finish:

    What You’ll Learn

    Master Mortise & Tenon Joinery:
Learn the classic technique of mortise and tenon joinery, the backbone of traditional timber framing.

You’ll work with both hand tools and power tools to create tight, durable joints that are the hallmark of solid timber frame construction.

    Hands-on Woodworking Techniques:
Learn how to timber frame using traditional hand tools, like a chisel and mallet, as well as modern tools, like a circular saw and router.

    Raise a Timber Frame:
The third day is raising day! You'll help your classmates raise a timber frame structure by hand.

Most classes raise a pergola with a combination of western and eastern joinery techniques.

The Japanese timber framing class with power tools will assemble a smaller model structure featuring multiple Japanese joints.

    Timber Frame Pergola Plans Included

Plans for an 8x8 pergola are included in the class so you can build your own timeless pergola at home.

    Why Take This Class?

Angel is a passionate timber framer who will give you personalized instruction every step of the way.

We're one of the few classes teaching centerline layout in addition to square rule.

Line rule layout is a traditional layout method that allows you to work with out of square timbers. It can even be used with round wood and it's perfect for incorporating flitch sawn pieces into your work.

We have small class sizes so you have plenty of personalized instruction.

We are NOT selling a frame built at class. You get to work on your own sample piece and bring it home at the end of class.

Students ask where they can leave us a 5 star review and leave comments like this:

    What’s Included

You will receive use of all needed tools and materials for class. That's right - you don't have to bring your own chisels!

We will give you comprehensive, personalized instruction on mortise and tenon joinery, tool use, and timber framing techniques. Most students are also able to complete a scarf joint.

You will receive hands on instruction with both hand tools and power tools in a hands-on learning enviornment.

At the end of class, you'll be able to bring your own model structure home for reference.

Each day a home cooked lunch is served family style.

On Sunday we'll raise a timber frame structure together.
