What is the difference between the Chinese New Year and the Lunar New Year?
In short, the Chinese New Year is a specific holiday in China and Lunar New Year refers to one of many different celebrations in China, Korea, Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and several other places.
Many Lunar New Year traditions are based on the Chinese New Year, but some traditions vary from place to place.
Many counties have their own names for the "Spring Festival" like Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea.
Because red envelopes are used in many different places, I'm calling this a Lunar New Year red envelope. It can be used for a Chinese New Year celebration or other Spring Festival event.
During Chinese New Year, adults traditionally give children a red envelope with money as gift. The red envelopes are a symbol of good luck.
The amount of money in your red envelope should end with an even number, but it shouldn't be given in 4's or including the number 4. (For example, $4 or $40.)
