Is there anything better than a day at the beach? (Besides a toddler who plays quietly for 30 minutes, of course!)
If you can’t make it to the shore this week, I’ve got the next best thing. This DIY beach moon sand is one of my favorite sensory recipes.
This homemade kinetic sand smells like a tropical vacation thanks to the coconut oil, and it has that perfect "sandy beige" look that makes kids feel like they’re actually digging in the dunes.

Why We Love "Moon Sand" (aka DIY Kinetic Sand)
If you’ve ever stood in the toy aisle staring at those expensive little containers of Kinetic Sand, I have good news: you can make a giant batch at home for pennies.
Aside from being budget-friendly, sensory play with moon sand has some amazing benefits for the little ones:
Improves fine motor skills
Squeezing, molding, and raking the sand builds those tiny hand muscles needed for writing.

Gives tactile input
It’s incredibly grounding and calming (great for sensory-seekers!).

Invitation open-ended creative play
There’s no "right" way to play with it. It can be a construction site one day and a mermaid cove the next.

The Realistic Beach Moon Sand Recipe (aka DIY Kinetic Sand Recipe)
The "secret" to this realistic beach color is actually a tiny amount of red food coloring. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it warms up the white flour to create that perfect, natural sandy hue.
Ingredients:
- 8 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup coconut oil (If it’s solid, pop it in the microwave for a few seconds until it’s clear and pourable!)
- 4-6 drops red food coloring

How to make your own moon sand (kinetic sand DIY recipe)
Start with the Flour: Grab a large mixing bin (one with a lid is best for storage later!) and pour in your 8 cups of flour.
- 9"x13": This oblong shaped baking dish makes the perfect traditional lasagna and casserole dishes while adding a pop of modern colors to the table.
- PERFECT LID FIT: Plastic lids are designed to securely keep your food fresh and tasty for longer. Too many leftovers? The Pyrex plastic lids keep a...
- NON-TOXIC LID: BPA-Free plastic lid is freezer, microwave, and top-rack dishwasher safe. No need to hold back when warming your food or storing your...
Melt your oil. If your coconut oil is solid, put it in a microwave save container and heat for a few seconds. Stir, then heat again, as needed, until it is a pourable liquid.
Add the oil. Pour that liquid coconut oil directly over the flour. It will start to smell amazing!

Add the color: Drop your red food coloring directly into the oil/flour mixture.

The Hand-Rub Method (The Secret Step!): This is where the magic happens. Use your hands to rub and massage the mixture together.
The friction from your hands breaks up those tiny red droplets and distributes them evenly. Watch as the white flour transforms into a soft, sandy beige!

Check the texture.
Squeeze a handful of the sand. Does it hold a firm, sharp shape like a sandcastle? Does it "melt" back into powder when you poke it? If yes, you’ve nailed it!

How to Store DIY Moon Sand
One of the best things about this recipe is that it lasts for ages. Just store it in an airtight container or a large Ziploc bag.
Pro-Tip: If you live in a cooler climate, the coconut oil might firm up between play sessions.
If the sand feels a little stiff, don't worry! Just have your child play with it for a minute; the warmth of their hands will reactivate the oil and make it silky-soft again in no time.
I hope you enjoy this homemade kinetic sand "recipe!" Be sure to check out the posts below for more craft tutorials:
