This chocolate dump cake is exactly what it sounds like. You dump the ingredients into a pan, give it a quick stir, and stick it in the oven. It’s perfect for pot lucks or easy weeknight desserts.
There are no fancy mixers required and, best of all, very few dishes to wash afterward. It’s rich, fudgy, and super easy. I hope you enjoy!

This recipe includes suggestions for making your chocolate dump cake gluten free.
If you go with a gluten free cake mix option, make sure to get a bigger box like the King Arthur option. The Simple Mills version usually comes in a smaller box.

How to Make Chocolate Dump Cake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C ) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Add the cake mix and the dry pudding mix directly into the prepared dish.

Pour in the milk and the oil.

Stir everything together lightly until just combined. You don't want to overmix this.

Scatter your chocolate chunks all over the top.

Bake the cake for 35–40 minutes. You’re looking for the center to be set. If you test it with a toothpick, it should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.

Let it cool slightly before you dive in. It’s hard to wait, I know, but it helps the cake set up!

Serving Suggestions
This cake is great on its own, but here are some serving ideas my family likes:
- Serve it warm with a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Top it with whipped cream and some fresh berries to cut through the richness.
- Go full chocolate-overload with a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
- Contrast the sweetness with a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Storage & Reheating your Chocolate Dump Cake
If you happen to have leftovers (lucky you!), here is how to keep them fresh:
- Room Temperature: Store it covered for up to 3 days.
- Refrigerator: It’ll stay good for up to 5 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze individual slices for up to 2 months.
- Reheat: For that "fresh out of the oven" feel, just microwave a slice for 15–20 seconds.
FAQs
Can I use water instead of milk? You can, but milk really gives the cake a much better richness and depth of flavor. If you're out of milk, water works in a pinch.
Why is it called a dump cake? Because it’s the ultimate "lazy" recipe! You just "dump" everything into one dish and bake. No extra bowls, no fuss.
Can I make it ahead of time? Yes! This cake actually stays incredibly moist, so it’s a great one to make a day early. It also reheats beautifully.
