Making a leprechaun trap is a great way to get kids involved with a home or classroom St. Patrick's Day celebration. You build a trap, either from household items or from a leprechaun trap kit, and set it the night before St. Patrick's Day.
There are many different ways to make a leprechaun trap. A simple way to make one is to decorate a toilet paper tube, then use pipe cleaners to make a ladder to the top so the little guy can climb up and then fall in. Make sure to add bait and leprechaun trap signs to point the way!
You can also grab these free rainbow templates so you can place your trap at the end of a rainbow. (Legend says that this is a favorite spot for leprechauns to hide their gold.)
There are also many leprechaun trap kits available if you don't feel like cobbling together the materials, yourself.

Building a leprechaun trap is a fun way for small children to practice their fine motor skills and learn about social studies.
You can use your trap project as a jumping off pint to teach about why green is the St Patricks Day color, the legend of St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Irish, Irish immigration to the United States, and so much more. It's a fun activity with tie ins to so many different lesson ideas!
The legend of the leprechaun says that, if you catch one, he will have to show you how to find his own pot of gold. Leprechauns are said to love gold, so it's popular to bait leprechaun traps with chocolate gold coins, Lucky Charms, Skittles, or other gold/rainbow themed treats to lure them in.
The next morning, your child or students inspect the trap for signs of leprechaun activity. Obviously you're not going to catch a sneaky leprechaun, but leaving a leprechaun trap letter will still delight your kiddos.
How to use a free printable leprechaun letter
This set of printable leprechaun letters contains two pages in the same PDF file.
One letter is geared towards leaving a treat in the trap as a consolation prize. The other page is for starting a scavenger hunt. This is not an editable leprechaun letter due to the clipart licensing agreement.
If you want to make your letters smaller (and more leprechaun-like, since they're very small), print the page to scale and trim way the extra paper. If you print at 50%, for example, the letter will be approximately 5" high and much more realistically sized if you have an inquisitive child who wants to know how such small creature could carry a large piece of paper.
You can print your letter on regular printer paper, but it's more special if you use a premium printer paper. For best results, I like to use 32lb bright white paper for my tooth fairy letters and leprechaun letters.
- Made in USA: HP Papers is sourced from renewable forest resources and has achieved production with 0% deforestation in North America.
- Heavyweight premium printing: HP Premium32 is a heavyweight (32 pounds), brighter (100 bright) and whiter (163 whiteness) paper with a super-smooth...
- Certified sustainable: HP Premium32 presentation paper is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and contributes toward satisfying credit MR1...
Once your kids are asleep (or, if you're a classroom teacher, after students are gone for the day), plant your chosen leprechaun letter for them to find in the morning!
