My daughter is currently obsessed with play dough and has a Play Doh smoothie maker that encourages you to mix colors. Instead of shelling out for lots of Play Doh that will get mixed right away, I picked up a bag of Costco flour and some food coloring to make my own.
I have a no-fail recipe for homemade play dough that stays soft and lasts forever. Stop by this post for your homemade play dough recipe.

Materials needed for play dough mats
You don't need much to use these summer play dough mats. Here's a look at the supplies you'll need:
- Your free printable (look for the row of purple arrows lower down in the post)
- Printer access & paper or card stock
- Laminator or page protectors/dry erase pockets
- Page protectors are easier to keep organized, dry erase pockets are more durable
- A dry or wet erase marker or, our favorite Stabilo Woodies
- Package includes 6 dry erase pocket sleeves in 6 bright colors, which are red, green, yellow, orange, pink, and blue.
- Mr. Pen dry erase pocket sleeves are made with durable and long-lasting PET plastic with industrial-grade stitching according to the highest quality...
- Our dry erase pockets measure 10 x 14 inches, which makes them perfect for storing most sizes of paper or student activity sheets.
As regular readers know, we love our Woodies. They are a large dry erase crayon that you can use to write, color, and draw. They won't stain or stink because they don't have ink. They also have a little more friction than a marker, which makes them better for improving fine motor strength.
- 30 times more color than a traditional colored pencil with extra color intensity, even on the darkest of papers
- Due to its chunky shape, size and indestructible lead it is perfect for children's hands and promotes a good grip
- The unique multi-talented pencil is a coloring pencil, watercolor and wax crayon all in one
How to use play dough mats
These summer play dough mats are very easy to use. Your child, or students, makes play dough "snakes" and lays them out to cover each image.
Each page has the corresponding vocabulary word in a tracing font for your child to trace with a marker or something like a Stabilo Woody crayon.
Although you don't absolutely have to protect the pages, sliding each one into a dry erase pocket/page protector (or laminating it) makes the pages last a lot longer. I recommend using dry erase pockets for ease and durability.
