How to use word tracing worksheets with beginning writers
Tracing worksheets are no-prep or low prep, depending on how you decide to use them.
They can be used in a variety of ways at home or at school. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Use them for independent work
- Use them in a literacy center
- Use them with a library activity
- Use them in occupational therapy
- Use them in homeschool lesson plans
- Have your child or students "rainbow write" each word by copying it multiple times in different colors
This sheet can be used just for tracing words, and you can also have your young learners practice writing words independently.
There is enough space on most of the lines to write the word a second, or even third, time. "Summer" is longer so there is a blank line underneath it for writing.
The words are not in alphabetical order. Having your child or students alphabetize the words is a way to extend the learning with this worksheet.
How To Prepare Early Learners For Word Tracing Worksheets
Make sure your child or student is ready for tracing words before using this type of activity. Introducing this activity too soon will cause frustration.
Your child does not need strong reading skills to use this interactive worksheet. They do need a familiarity with tracing and writing the alphabet confidently.
If your child is having trouble with alphabet tracing, provide pre-writing worksheets until their confidence and fine-motor skills develop. There are many prewriting and tracing worksheets available on the Artisan Life.
Make sure to provide appropriate writing tools for beginning writers. We prefer to use Channie's preschool pencils. They help young kids develop proper pencil grip and help ensure your child's hand doesn't become tired too quickly.
