When is the Chinese New Year?
Depending on how you plan to teach your Spring Festival unit, it could be appropriate to use this as part of a Chinese New Year or a Lunar New Year lesson.
So what's the difference between the Chinese New Year and the Lunar New Year?
The terms Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are not exactly interchangeable and they've both stirred up controversy in recent years.
The Chinese New Year is typically celebrated on the second new moon after the winter solstice.
Some other countries and cultures celebrate a lunar new year on the Chinese New Year date.
Some different cultures celebrate on the first new moon after the Winter Solstice, and some have an entirely different date (such as the Thai New Year on April 13).
Each region has its own specific foods and traditions for their Lunar New Year celebration.
In spite of differences, many Asian Lunar New Year celebrations include major elements of the Chinese New Year tradition, such as fireworks and the color red.
According to my friends and family who have lived and worked in China, it is appropriate to call the holiday the "Chinese New Year" when speaking about Chinese-specific traditions and their spring holiday.
Chinese New Year is a specific term. Lunar New Year is a broader term that encompasses other holidays and traditions.
When teaching about traditions specific to other Lunar New Year celebrations, it is best to refer to them by name (for example, Tet or Songkran).
Most, but not all, Asian countries that celebrate a Lunar New Year use the Chinese Zodiac system with the same animals.
How to use printable worksheets
You don't need much to use this year of the horse worksheet. You'll need:
- Your free printable worksheets (look for the download link towards the bottom of the page)
- Printer access & paper
- A developmentally appropriate pencil
- Crayons, pencils, etc for coloring
- Dry erase pockets or page protectors, optional
