Materials needed to make your own leprechaun
You don't need construction paper for this craft, but here are the simple materials you will want:
- Your free template printable (look for the row of purple arrows lower down in the post)
- Card stock or paper
- I used my favorite bight white 32# paper for my craft. It is thicker than regular paper but easier to cut than card stock.
- Child-friendly scissors
- Child-friendly pointed tip scissors work best for this particular craft
- Glue stick
- Popsicle stick, if you want to make a puppet
- Crayons and embellishments (glitter, pom poms, etc), if you're using the coloring page version
How to make a leprechaun paper craft
This is a super easy craft to set up and a fun way to challenge your child's fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
First, download your free printable from lower down in the post. Learning Center members can log in here to quickly and easy download the PDF file from their simplified, ad-free site.

Print off as many copies as you need of your preferred leprechaun craft template. Card stock is more durable for making puppets, but paper can be easier for children to cut.
If you're using the coloring page version, coloring the leprechaun is easier before cutting the pieces out.
Have your child or students cut out all of the individual pieces. Each piece does not have to be fully cut out and the legs don't have to be separated. They are spaced perfectly on the printable page.
The beard needs to be cut carefully and it's best if the lower edges of the hair, body, and hat are cut along the lines, but other than that it's okay to not cut things right on the line.
Practice test fitting the paper pieces to ensure everything goes on in the correct order. The best order to glue your little leprechauns together is:
- Beard onto face
- Hair onto face
- Hat over hair
- Ears glued from the back of the head
- Head glued on top of body
- Hands glued at the sleeve cuffs from behind
- Legs glued to the body from behind
After your child or students know how everything fits together, have them use a glue stick to glue everything down. My leprechaun in the photo below is not glued because I couldn't find a glue stick when I had time to take photos. #momlife
Once the fun craft is complete, it can be glued to a popsicle stick or used to make a paper bag puppet. Your leprechaun puppet can be used in puppet plays, imaginative play, or as a storytelling prop for your St. Patrick's Day story time.
