This planner is a fun way to clear out old habits and ways of thinking from the past year while planning new things for the upcoming year.

Looking for more planner printables for the year ahead? Make sure to get your January planner pages and snag your January journal pages.

This set of printables is aimed at goal setting and positive changes, not habit tracking. If you want to develop new habits in the new year, make sure to check out this post with free printable habit trackers and ideas for habits to track.

This planner bundle was designed with individual home use in mind, but it could also be used as part of an English language arts lesson or psychology lesson for older students. It can be used as an after winter break activity to help your students get back into the swing of things at school.

Research shows that writing down goals makes you about twice as likely to achieve your goal, so let's jump into a bit about goal setting and get you your free printables!

    Setting New Year's goals

I'm personally not big on new years resolutions. I prefer to set goals. Not everyone is like me, though, so this set of printables includes pages for both.

You've heard it before, but I'll mention it again briefly. Goals need to be concrete, achievable, and measurable.

People frequently use the acronym SMART to describe effective goals - specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely.

In short, you need to know exactly what your goal is and set a goal that is definitive. "Get better at x" or "do y more often" isn't a very good goal. "Practice hand lettering at least twice a week for 30 minutes each time" and "do yoga at least twice a week" are specific and measurable goals.

You also have to make sure that your goal is achievable. This means both that it is realistic and that it is within your power to control the outcome. You cannot control other people or the wider world, in general. Your goal must be something that rests within your control.

Achievable does not mean it has to be easy, but it does need to be realistic. It can be a stretch and require hard work, but it must be possible if you want to set yourself up for success.

For example, if you've never run a step in your life, start by setting the goal to train for a 5k, not a marathon.

Once you get your first 5k you can set a goal for a 10k, then work your way up to a marathon (if you want).

Each time you meet a goal, your body produces a hit of dopamine and you'll feel great about yourself and your progress.

Lastly, don't get bogged down by every little detail in life. Pick a few main goals you want to track, but don't try to over plan and micromanage your life.

This is a bird's eye view of setting goals for personal development. If you want to know more, please visit this post with tips for how to set new goals and download your goal planning workbook.
