It's ironic that I've decided to write a review of Mike Pearson's Stupid Simple SEO and I feel like Mike wouldn't quite approve.
Part of the course is about niching down and making sure Google knows what your blog is about, and my blog definitely isn't about blogging or SEO or courses or any of that stuff! I just can't help myself, though.
I have to share my review of Mike Pearson's Stupid Simple SEO and my mini case study on why I deleted half my content & what it did for my views.
Alright, let's get into the review!
Table of Contents
You can't ignore SEO
I've been blogging for a long time, but I haven't always treated my blog with respect or taken it seriously. In retrospect, I treated my blog a bit like social media. I'd post very short things just to have an update, photos without words, etc. Back in the day that kind of worked. The times changed, but I didn't.
This feels awkward to admit, but I had higher blog views in 2016 than 2017 or 2018. That's right, folks, my blog views were declining.
You know how that feels? Awful. It feels awful.
I kept writing content and trying to write "good" posts, but I didn't put the work in to really figure out what that meant. I had no idea how to find useful keywords, research user intent, or structure my posts in a mobile-friendly way. I kept pouring in time and love, only to be faced with lower and lower blog views.
As embarrassing as it is to admit, I didn't realize how important it is to pay attention to page rank and off-page optimization, not just on-page keywords. I didn't know how important backlinks are or how to get them.
I kept trying to read up on keyword research and SEO, but it was so confusing.
I didn't even really understand why organic traffic (aka Google traffic) is so much more valuable than social media traffic. 😱
But I knew something had to change. I saw people I trust recommending the Stupid Simple SEO course and, as luck would have it, the course was actually open for enrollment at the time (I signed up in November 2018). It felt risky and scary to buy a blogging course when my husband wasn't working, but I went for it and I have absolutely no regrets.
How is Stupid Simple SEO different?
There are loads of SEO articles on the internet, and even plenty of SEO courses for bloggers. So how is Stupid Simple SEO different from other SEO courses? Why is it worth your $$$?
Stupid Simple SEO truly is simple, and I mean that in the best way possible.
It's explained in language 'normal' people can understand. You don't have to be super tech savvy or up to date with Google's constantly changing features to understand what the heck Mike is talking about.
The course is also easy to use and broken down into actionable modules.
Mike is clear that you need to do what feels right for your blog, even if it's not "technically" the "best" thing to do from an SEO perspective. He teaches that your blog is your site and ultimately something that's not "perfect" for SEO may be right for you.
There's a Stupid Simple SEO private Facebook group that is active and helpful. Mike is frequently on there personally to answer questions, and the community is supportive.
Mike has a free 5 day SEO e-mail course. The paid class isn't always open for enrollment, but his newsletter and free class are. Unlike some opt-ins that leave you feeling let down and like they're just a big ad, the 5 day class has actionable tips. Mike also sends out periodic emails with updated information, case studies, and more.
The course is only open for enrollment for a few days every quarter. I signed up in November 2018. At the time of updating this post in August 2019, the next launch is August 12-16. Please visit the Stupid Simple SEO blog and get on Mike's list so you don't miss out if you think there's even a chance you'll be interested!
What's in Stupid Simple SEO?
I'm not going to bore you with a super long list of every single lesson title, and it's obviously not my place to give away course content, but let's take a quick look at what's in Stupid Simple SEO!
First off, it's a video based course with a combination of slides and screen sharing so you can see Mike actually demonstrate the processes, give examples, etc.
This means the video quality is high (it's a computer screen, not a video of him talking) and the audio is good. Yay!
Mike gives concrete examples and sources. He doesn't just say "trust me, this stuff is important guys" - he goes out of his way to show you where a Google employee says it's important. He also visits websites to give specific examples of what to do (or what not to do) so you know exactly what he's talking about.
Topics in the course include:
- How to understand user intent and write relevant posts.
- How to rank, even if you have a broad site.
- How to clean up your site, make sure it's running as quickly as possible, and that it's mobile-friendly.
- How to design your site to a) rank and b) give a good user experience.
- How to do keyword research in an EASY to understand way that doesn't waste all your time.
- How to do keyword research for you existing content to improve its standing.
- How to develop a content strategy and determine what keywords you can actually rank for.
- How to use Yoast correctly. (This one was seriously eye opening!)
- How to research, write, and optimize epic content.
- How to build links & the importance of link building.
Update May 2019! The course also has new bonus content on how to hire and manage writers!
Stupid Simple SEO also includes email outreach templates, idea tracker spreadsheets and checklists, and a list of suggested tools and plugins.
I don't even know how many times I said "I really wish I'd learned this year ago!" and "Wow, this actually makes sense now!" to my husband while watching the course. Stupid Simple SEO truly does break SEO down in a way that's accessible "to the rest of us" and provides tons of actionable information.
Did you really delete half your blog posts?
Yes.
One of the sections in the course deals with making a site audit. I didn't have to look very hard to realize that many of my posts simply weren't searchable and weren't serving me.
Over the course of a week, I took down a whole lot of posts. I don't know the exact number of posts I had published, but it was over 1000. Now I have around 550. Many of these still need major help, but it's a work in progress.
I set up redirects using a free plugin recommended in the class, even though most of the posts I deleted got 0-5 views a year. Okay, so some got like 10 a year, but whatever.
So what kinds of posts did I delete? All my old Wordless Wednesday posts are gone. The Monday cute animal photo posts are gone. The "Hey, everyone, I don't have time to post this week!" posts are gone. The Etsy Treasury posts are gone because Etsy Treasuries haven't even been a thing in forever.
Whether or not you decide to enroll in Stupid Simple SEO, I hope that you decide to do a site audit and take a look at whether or not your old posts are serving you. The problem is, "low quality" old content isn't just sitting around like a coat waiting for winter to roll around again. It may be actively hurting your standing with Google.
It kind of hurt to scrap so many posts, but I knew it was for the best. Part of me was afraid my views would tank...but they didn't. Even though I started working on SEO and my site audit after Thanksgiving, my organic (from search engines) traffic is up! And that brings us too...
Do you get results from Stupid Simple SEO?
If you actually pay attention to the content and act on it, yes, I believe it's safe to say you can expect to see results.
Mike isn't shy about letting you know that SEO takes time. It isn't like social media traffic, which can be a lot quicker and doesn't rely on building your domain authority, backlinks, etc.
As they say, a year from now you'll wish you'd started today. That's how SEO is. You may not see results immediately, but the sooner you start, the sooner the results (and Google views!) will come.
In spite of the holiday season, which is notorious for being rough for most blogs, my organic views has been climbing steadily since I started writing new posts with SEO in mind and working to make The Artisan Life more SEO-friendly.
Please keep in mind that this snapshot is over the holiday season, which means both lower blog views and less time to put into my blog. There were a dozen people here for Christmas! Even so, you can see that both my traffic and my organic traffic have increased in the past 90 days:
I've also seen an increase in my domain authority on both AHREFS and Moz. Hooray!
I haven't implemented any link building strategies yet. I'm still focusing on cleaning up my old content and making sure new content is high quality and relevant. I'm sure once I start actively link building my results will improve even more!
I absolutely credit Stupid Simple SEO with these improvements and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings.
Updated results April, 2019
I decided to leave my earlier results section intact so you can see how quickly things started to change for me once I began paying attention to SEO, but I also wanted to give you some updated results after nearly 6 months of actually having a content strategy and paying attention to SEO.
Here's a side-by-side comparison for the first three weeks of April, 2018 and April 2019:
As you can see, my number of sessions per user is down very, very slightly, but everything else has improved dramatically!
Pageviews have also improved dramatically and are up over 100%. After years of falling traffic, this is amazing to see!
Here's the graph of my traffic since early November 2018, right before starting SSSEO :
August 2019 results update
Quick August 2019 update: Things continue improving for me! My traffic always has a seasonal uptick because I have some very popular graduation posts, but my traffic for July was double previous years! This screenshot shows my page views (by week) from July 1, 2017 - July 31, 2019.
That little spike up right above the '2019' is actually December 2018 - the month I started putting SSSEO into practice.
All this translates to a higher blog income.
Logically, more traffic = greater income.
I don't do income reports so I'm not sharing specifics, but the past two months have been my highest earning months of all time. My blog income has gone from barely enough to actually cover my blogging-related expenses to enough to actually cover many of our recurring monthly expenses.
It doesn't make sense to do a direct ad income comparison since I was running AdSense and Gourmet Ads and now I'm with Mediavine. I have a much higher CPM, so of course my earnings are higher. They would be better even with the same traffic due to a better RPM! Combining a better RPM with twice as many page views = one happy blogger!
Although SSSEO does not cover affiliate marketing, increased pageviews has increased my affiliate earnings, too.
My pageviews month to date are 110% higher, but combining affiliate strategies from other courses/books I've taken with higher-quality, more targeted posts means my Amazon earnings are 280% better than for the same period last year!

I really hope this look at the course helps you out and if you have any questions please let me know!

Interesting post! I, too, need to delete my old Etsy Treasury posts. Of course, I also need to get back to writing posts, ha!
Natasha
I had dozens and dozens of Treasury posts. Ones with a screenshot obviously sill had the image, but all the ones with embedded code were just broken code. I can't believe I didn't even think to take them down ages ago! I hope you get the chance to write more soon. I enjoy your posts - they're aways so informative.

Your blog is one of the very few (or sometimes only) Blog I read from beginning to end. I always find every Blog truly interesting!
Coincidentally - the past few weeks I started checking my STATS daily - and noticed a major increase. So many read the Blogs - may send me a convo (etsy message) how much they loved my love. On my last Blog when I send all those included in my Promotional Blog, I asked that instead of sending an outside message, to please leave a message on the Blog, and to click the “LIKE” button, as I mentioned that this would greatly increased my STATS which it did!
I notice there is no LIKE button this time on your Blog (coincidence??)
The past year I noticed Weekly Wednesday - Throwback Thursday, etc have slowly disminished; but alway notice that when I just post a scenic photo, etc - They get tons of likes (go figure).
I am glad I haven’t deleted my old Blogs, as my computer crashed about 6 mos ago with all my pics. I realized that many of my Blogs contained many of the photo’s that were originally deleted. I have gone back and resaved most of them into my IPad Photo folder.
Ok as for “Stupid SEO” - I did purchase and SEO listing for Jewelry and Crochet items a few years ago. Did it help redoing my titles, etc to reflect the SEO’s of the item - maybe???
My other thought - sorry Google - but everyday on the news are stories of how Google is infiltrating most people sites for the purpose of advertising, etc. Wonder if this is the case with “Stupid SEO’ by Google to get people to sign up, a chance to get more people on Google, gaining more access to our personal info. So I am not quite sure if I wish to sign up for their “free” video; but will be mindful of using SEO’s throughout my future Blogs to see if they increase my STATS. Will let you know my observations.
In the meantime, thank you for another meaningful and interesting Blog. Don’t stop doing your Blog about your darling little girl, and baby suggestions of useful ideas for young mothers. Although mine are grown I still find the information helpful and sometimes takes me back a few years. So. I say continue doing what you have been writing which always comes from your heart which is more than any views!!
Ps - don’t stop your amazing artistic photos!!
Sorry for this being so long, but do wonder of Google’s sudden interest in governing people’s personal Blogs. Love to hear your thoughts.
Pam

I don't think that Google has a particular interest in controlling people's personal blogs. They are a business and trying to retain their position as the most used search engine by providing results that are (hopefully/theoretically) in line with what people want when they search for something. Unfortunately, things like Wordless Wednesday don't provide lasting value to anonymous internet users. They can be fun for friends to see, but they're not valuable evergreen content.
My blog is not meant to be purely personal, though sometimes it's leaned more in that direction. I started writing online in grad school to make extra money, first by writing pieces for the people, then on HubPages, and finally on my own blog. For the past year, my blog has been my primary source of income. Since my husband hasn't worked full time (only one weekend a month) since April, it's actually been my family's main source of income! That's why I need to learn more about SEO. There's nothing wrong with having a personal blog, not learning SEO, or not trying for more page views, it's just not where I am right now.
Although I've wanted to increase my views and income, I didn't really understand what I needed to do to get there. Thanks to Mike's class, I understand why things I've tried didn't work and what I need to do differently. The class name "stupid simple SEO" is meant to convey that it's easy to understand. Mike's just a blogger and has no affiliation with Google so his free email course isn't giving anything extra to G.
Although I have deleted, or moved to drafts, many of my posts, those photos are still in my media library. There are a few personal photos I don't have anywhere else!
As for the like option...I deactivated it a few weeks ago. Every plugin and add-on makes your site slower, which is bad for SEO. You were the only person who ever used the WP like function for my posts! Although I enjoyed seeing those likes, I realized it wasn't worth the trade off for me. I can get likes on IG and FB. =)
I hope that answers some of your questions!
