    What is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated annually on May 5.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It's a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, but is popular in the United States as a celebration of Mexican culture.

As regular readers know, we are a bi-lingual household and my husband is a Hispanic immigrant. If you're looking for Spanish language printables for your little learner, be sure to grab these Spanish alphabet tracing pages and this gross motor game with colors in Spanish.

These color by number pages feature Mexican-themed images. They are captioned "Fiesta Color by Number" so you can use them at other times in the year, like during Hispanic Heritage Month.

If you'd like to share authentic Spanish language stories with your child or students (not just translations of English language stories), we recommend the book Pio Peep. It's in both English and Spanish and features traditional Spanish language nursery rhymes.

The music of José-Luis Orozco is fun, kid-friendly, and a great introduction to traditional Mexican songs for kids. If you're Hispanic, you'll recognize favorites like Los Pollitos and Los Elphantes in his body of work. I've linked up a version of Chocolate that shows traditional elements of making Mexican hot chocolate and showcases his typical style:

How to use Cinco de Mayo themed color-by-number printables

These color by number pages feature numbers 1-9. They were designed with kindergarten students in mind, but pre-k kids could work on them with help and they can also be used by first graders.

These pages help teach numbers and color words while building children's hand muscles and hand-eye coordination. They're fun and developmentally appropriate.

If your children/students are still working on reading their color names, you can make a color key by coloring in the tip of each crayon with the correct color. My daughter likes to do this for herself now that she's becoming more confident in her reading abilities.

    • Use the pages in math centers
    • Get your entire family involved with coloring
    • Use them as morning work
    • Use them with small groups or as independent work
    • Provide them as extra practice for students who are working towards mastery of numbers and color words
    • Use them with occupational therapy clients
    • Place them in your sub plans
