How to pick the best dinosaur toys for toddlers

Selecting safe, non toxic dinosaur toys can be tricker than it seems. Here are a few things to look out for while you're shopping for dino toys:

Recommended age range

Always consider a toy's recommended age range. Toys marked for children under three "...must not release pieces that fit completely into the small parts cylinder after impact, flexure, torque, tension and compression testing. These tests simulate the forces that toys and products can experience during normal use and abuse by children under 3. If these forces cause parts to break off that fit in the cylinder, those parts present a risk of choking, aspiration or ingestion to children under 3." (source)

Toys sold for children 3 and up may pose a greater safety hazard to your toddler. This does not mean they are guaranteed to be unsafe, but it does mean they will always need adult supervision and that you should avoid toys for children 3+ if your toddler still mouths toys.

Additionally, toys sold for children over 6 do not have to adhere to the same heavy metals testing requirements. It is assumed that children over 6 are not likely to mouth a toy. Giving a toddler a toy marketed for children over 6 may be more likely to expose them to toxic metals like cadmium. 

Toy materials

Consider a toy's materials and your personal preferences. For example, you may want to purchase wood toys because they are more ecologically friendly and may be safer than plastic toys. 

Select toys that promise to be lead and phthalate free and/or state they adhere to ASTM, CPSIA, or other reputable toy standards.

Dinosaur toy size

Select toys that are small enough for your toddler to use them, but not so small that they may present a chocking hazard. Big dinosaur toys are lots of fun, but make sure to get plush or hollow toys that aren't so heavy your toddler can't safely play. Electronic or low-tech

Electronic toys get lots of hype, but they can also be a nuisance. They require batteries and the lights or sounds may annoy you as a parent. Unfortunately, although they seem pretty cool, they may not be as developmental appropriate as low-tech toys.

One study showed that electronic toys "were associated with decreased quantity and quality of language" when compared to playing with books and traditional toys. (source)
