Pumpkin face mask benefits
Let's take a look at the ingredients in this face mask so you know what benefits they bring and what/if any substitutions may be right for you!
Pumpkin's benefits for skin
Pumpkin, like all brightly colored vegetables, is full of vitamins and minerals. It is loaded with B vitamins like niacin, riboflavin, B6, ย and folate. Its distinctive orange color comes from beta carotene, and pumpkin also has lots of Vitamins C and A.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and beta carotene is incredibly beneficial for your skin. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production and beta carotene may help protect your skin from UV damage.
To receive even more benefits from pumpkin, try eating more of it in non-pie recipes like this pumpkin penne pasta, healthy pumpkin fruit dip, or vegetarian pumpkin lentil curry!
Cosmetic clay
There are several types of clay used for DIY beauty products. They have different benefits and uses, so pick the one that makes the most sense for you and your skin type!
Kaolin clay is the most gentle cosmetic clay and it's the best choice for people with dry and/or sensitive skin. Kaolin is typically the easiest cosmetic clay to find. If you have a local natural grocery store, you may be able to buy it from the bulk spice section. If you want to make your own natural skincare products, then go ahead and get yourself a bag of kaolin because it's affordable and great to have on hand!
- Natural Ingredients: Made with Kaolin Clay, a natural ingredient that gently cleanses without over-drying.
- Unscented Formula: Free of artificial fragrances, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
- For All Skin Types: Suitable for normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive skin.
Rose clay is commonly considered a type of kaolin clay, which means it's also a good choice for dry skin.
Bentonite clay and French green clay are good choice for normal/combination skin. French green clay is a bit more 'powerful' than kaolin clay, so you might want to avoid it if you have especially sensitive skin.
Rhassoul clayย (also called Ghassoul clay) can be more difficult to find and a little more expensive, but it's great stuff. Rhassoul clay is a great choice for people who have been left too dry feeling after other clay facial masks.
Rhassoul clay has a high mineral content, including magnesium and silica (which helps your body produce collagen) and comes from Morocco. It is known for providing gentle exfoliation while soothing and hydrating skin and reducing dryness/flakiness. Many people use Rhassoul clay for their hair and scalp, too.

Oils for dry skin
I added a drop of oil to my face mask. You can use your favorite oil, or even olive oils. You can also omit the oil if you don't have anything on hand. If you don't have a dropper or a clean pipette, just pour in the tiniest quantity you can.
Some of the best oils for dry skin are:
- Jojoba oil
- Hemp seed oil
- Avocado oil
- Evening primrose oil
- Apricot kernel oil
Essential oils for dry skin
I also added a single drop of essential oil. This isn't mandatory, but makes your mask smell great and can offer additional benefits for your skin!
Not all essential oils are suitable for delicate facial skin. Make sure to pick an oil that is beneficial and safe for dry facial skin.
- Chamomile is a classic calming and soothing herb. The essential oil is perfect for dry, sensitive skin.
- Geranium is another great balancing essential oil that can help sooth irritated, dry skin. It smells kind of like roses, so most people like its scent.
- Ylang yang is another calming, soothing essential oil that can work well in this face mask.
- Rose is a traditional oil for soothing dry or inflamed skin.
- Frankensense. Frankincense is my favorite essential oil for skin and what I personally used.
Avoid using drying oils like lemongrass, tea tree, and cinnamon if you have dry skin.
How to make a pumpkin & clay face mask
Pumpkin face mask ingredients
- 2 teaspoons cosmetic clay
- 2-4 teaspoons pumpkin puree (I used canned organic, you can use fresh or canned)
- 1 drop oil
- 1 drop essential oil
- Small bowl or container for mixing
- Measuring spoon
- Spoon or spatula for mixing (I always use a small silicone spatula reserved just for skincare products)
- A nitrile glove, optional
How to make a clay mask for dry skin
Measure 2 teaspoons of cosmetic clay into a clean bowl.
Add pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon at a time and mix to combine. Adding the pumpkin one spoonful at a time will help you create the consistency of mask you want and that's right for your clay. When you have a spreadable paste, you've added enough pumpkin!
Add a drop of oil:
And a drop of essential oil:
Stir to combine the oils and you're ready to use your mask!
To use your mask, make sure your hands are very clean or just wear a new nitrile glove. (Charming photo, right? =p )
Spread the mask onto your face and leave it to dry for 10-20 minutes. Wash off, pat your face dry, and follow up with your favorite oil or moisturizer!
How often can you use a pumpkin face mask?
People frequently want to know how often you can use a facial mask.
In general, it's a good idea to treat your skin to a mask once a week. If you use mild ingredients, like kaolin clay, and it doesn't irritate your skin, you could use a mask 2-3 times a week. If you have dry skin, I'd recommend sticking to just once a week with a clay mask, though.

I love pumpkin masks but I have never made my own. There was one I used to buy years ago and it made my skin absolutely glow! The beta hydroxy acids in pumpkin are so great for gently exfoliating! I can't wait to make this. A bonus is that I bet it smells delicious. ๐
