Teaching Earth day to young children
Earth Day is observed each year on April 22nd. It was started in 1970 as a way to bring awareness to air pollution, pesticides, and contaminated drinking water. Today it more generally encompass teaching care of the Earth and also emphasizes activities such as recycling and gardening.
The book I Am Earth is a fun way to teach preschool and kindergarten aged students about the planet Earth.

Activities like planting seeds and working in a garden can make Earth Day's abstract concepts more concrete for younger kids.
My favorite seeds to start with kids are radishes. They grow incredibly quickly. Start them now and you'll have huge plants by the time school ends! Discover everything you need to know about planting and growing radishes in this post.

How to use Earth Day color-by-number printables
These color by number pages feature numbers 1-9. They were designed with kindergarten students in mind, but pre-k kids could work on them with help and they can also be used by first graders.
These pages help teach numbers and color words while building children's hand muscles and hand-eye coordination. They're fun and developmentally appropriate. It's a win-win!
If children are still working on reading their color names, you can make a color key by coloring in the tip of each crayon with the correct color. My daughter likes to do this for herself now that she's gaining reading confidence.
There are many ways to use these color-by-number pages. Here are a few creative ways to use this printable pack:
- Use the pages in math centers
- Get your entire family involved with coloring
- Use them as morning work
- Use them with small groups or as independent work
- Provide them as extra practice for students who are working towards mastery of numbers and color words
- Use them with occupational therapy clients
- Place them in your sub plans
You can make these coloring sheets reusable by sliding each page into a heavy duty sheet protector or dry erase pocket. This means you can reuse the pages in your classroom center and save paper to help celebrate your Earth Day theme.
- Package includes 6 dry erase pocket sleeves in 6 bright colors, which are red, green, yellow, orange, pink, and blue.
- Mr. Pen dry erase pocket sleeves are made with durable and long-lasting PET plastic with industrial-grade stitching according to the highest quality...
- Our dry erase pockets measure 10 x 14 inches, which makes them perfect for storing most sizes of paper or student activity sheets.
Instead of using dry erase markers, which erase themselves, use Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 crayons. They color very well and don't erase themselves, plus they're made out of wood instead of plastic. Check out the video below to see what I mean! (Get the pictured dinosaur coloring pages in this post.)
- Washable
- XXL lead applies as much pigment as 8 colored pencils at once
- Large width ideal for smaller hands
