The legend of Groundhog Day
Groundhog's Day occurs on February 2 each year. It was first celebrated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in 1887.
According to lore, if the groundhog sees his shadow, he will be scared and scurry back in his borrow for six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
Amusingly, data suggest you might want to assume the opposite of whatever Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog predicts because he only has about a 40% accuracy rate.
The tradition has its roots in the festival of Candlemas, when clergy would distribute candles for use during the coming year. Candlemas was frequently also used in Germany as a date for contracts and rents. The date for Candlemas was set as February 2 because it is 40 days after Christmas.
In old German tradition, if a badger or hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas it portended four more weeks of winter. German settlers in Pennsylvania adopted the groundhog for the traditions since neither badgers nor hedgehogs are native to the area (source).
