Free Printable Valentine’s Day Unicorn Cut & Paste Puzzle

  • Share

This free printable cut and paste puzzle for Valentine’s Day is low-prep fine motor fun for kids 3-5! Your child and/or students can work on their fine motor skills and problem solving abilities as they recreate the cute Valentine’s unicorn picture. It is easy to differentiate instruction with this activity because there are two versions of the puzzle. One has a hint image and one does not.

How to use cut & paste puzzles

If you’re familiar with cut and paste puzzles and want to skip to the PDF, click here to jump to the download area.

Cut and paste puzzles seem super easy to adults, but they can be surprisingly difficult for young children. Children usually look at the puzzle piece shape, not the picture. This strategy doesn’t work for this puzzle because each piece is a square! The square pieces make your child actually look at the image and decide whether or not it matches/makes sense.

There are two versions of this Valentine’s Day unicorn puzzle: one with a light background image in the solution area and one without a picture. Children who have mastered simple puzzles with the reference image can move on to the plain white background version for an extra challenge.

Here are ideas for different ways to use this printable puzzle:

Let your child use a blunt-tipped pair of small scissors so they can practice their cutting. We own multiple pairs of these small Fiskars scissors.

Your child’s work won’t be perfect and that’s okay. The squares from this Easter lamb puzzle my daughter worked aren’t perfect, but she was so proud of herself for cutting them out.

Your child can paste the image in place, or not glue it down so they can solve the puzzle multiple times. Little kids love gluing. My daughter enjoys using a small pot with a paintbrush and white glue for her gluing activities. For less mess, use a non-toxic glue stick. You can also use poster putty or even a piece of play dough.
