Farm theme for toddlers and preschoolers
Teaching young children about farms is so important. These particular pages focus on popular farm animals - get dot marker fruit and vegetable pages to complement your farm unit here. This free printable garden matching game is another fun activity for learning about food.
Books and low-tech toys are a great way to prepare your child for a farm visit or teach about farms if you can't visit one in person.
We have several many books about animals for toddlers and preschoolers. When my daughter was 18 months old, I wrote an entire post on the best animal books for toddlers. If you have an animal-loving tot, be sure to stop by.
Our favorite farm book for babies and toddlers is the DK My First Farm. It's a sturdy board book with tabs for easy page turning. It has lots of real photographs with many different images for each theme (like horses, tractors, and other farm vehicles). If your young child enjoys animals and farms, this book is a must-have.

Slightly older children (preschoolers and kindergarteners) will enjoy the National Geographic Farm Animals level 1 book.
We have several books in this series. They're designed as early readers for children 4-6, but my 3 year old loves having them read to her. They have just the right amount of information without being overwhelming. The left-hand side of each two page spread has more text and the right-hand page has shorter, simpler text for building independent reading confidence.

Another fun way to practice fine motor skills during your farm theme with these farm animal lacing cards. My daughter loves her cards, and the wood tray is perfect for fine motor tracing activities. We store our cards in an ArtBin Semi-Satchel and use the tray for other activities.
- Identify shapes while practicing lacing skills
- 5 double-sided, wooden shapes with color-coordinated laces included
- Ideal for practice of fine motor skills
The cooperative game Barnyard Bunch is a favorite at our house. Players work together to try to keep animals from running away from the barn. Like many Haba toys, it's made in Germany, not Asia. The game does have small animal pieces, so make sure your child is past putting every single thing in their mouth before introducing it.
- oh no! Farmer Fridolin's animals got out of the barn. He needs the help of you and his sheepdog Lilli to lure them back in this dice rolling, "working...
- Action 1: Roll the die. A color means that each animal on a space of that color moves 1 space away from the barn. Roll Farmer Fridolin and all the...
- Action 2: Draw a card and perform the action shown. Will an animal get closer to escape? or will Farmer Fridolin persevere? Remember, an animal who...
Are dab it marker coloring pages developmental for toddlers?
Dauber marker coloring pages are popular, easy, no-prep activity. But are they developmentally appropriate and beneficial for your child's development?
Yes! Dot marker coloring pages are developmentally appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers! Thank goodness - an activity that's inexpensive, easy, and educational. Dot marker pages can also benefit older children who need extra practice with their fine motor skills.
Dot marker pages help your child develop:
- Hand-eye coordination
- Grip strength
- Finger strength
- Manual dexterity
- Creativity and artistic expression
Providing you child with plenty of opportunities to practice their fine motor skills helps prepare them for writing. It also develops their strength and coordination for other important activities like (eventually) tying their own shoes, zipping, buttoning, lacing, and brushing their teeth neatly instead of getting toothpaste all over their face, the mirror, and the family cat.
How to use dot it marker coloring pages
The circles on these pages are based on the size of my daughter's Classic Do a Dot Markers. The circles are sized for this popular brand of dauber markers, but they also work with other dauber or bingo style markers.
The only markers I'm not sure about are some very small looking ones I saw at the Target Dollar Spot. I didn't buy any, but they appeared significantly more narrow than most dot markers. These smaller markers would obviously be able to dot on the pages, they just wouldn't fill the circles in a satisfactory way.
Make sure you always store dot markers on their sides, not upright. My daughter always wants to set them up on end, but this drains the ink out of the sponge. If your markers are dotting poorly and leaving blank areas, get the ink flowing again by pouncing a few times on a scrap piece of paper or cardboard. I usually use an old Amazon box so I can pounce firmly without worrying about ink leaking through.
You can make the pages reusable by using plastic bingo chips to cover the circles. Make sure your child isn't putting things in their mouth anymore before introducing plastic bingo chips. These are the bingo chips we use:
- Health Care and Sanitary: Made from original PVC granules, high transparency and durability are preserved during the process of production. Ensure...
- Mega Bundle: 500 PCS in total, no need to worry even you lose some, a real bargain that you wouldn’t miss.
- Multiple Color: 8 colors could afford multiple using scenarios or classification needs. With different colors you have more ways to demonstrate or...
For an easy, no-mess activity, use these dot it printables printables with round coding label stickers. This is a great quiet time activity for car trips, doctor's appointments, visits with adult friends who don't have kids, and any time you need hands and clothes to stay clean (instead of covered in marker again).
Coding label stickers come in different sizes. Make sure to get ¾″ or ⅝″ round stickers, not 1" stickers. One inch round stickers are too big for these pages. We use these stickers. You get literally thousands of them for a few dollars. My daughter is using her stickers in the picture below with an Easter dot it printable:
- ✅ PACKAGE. 2400 Pcs round color coding circle dot sticker labels in 15 colors and 1 zipper file bag.
- ✅ PREMIUM QUALITY. Made from photo-grade paper with permanent adhesive. Sourced material from world top supplier.
- ✅ SMART DESIGN. Easy peel and stick from sheets, sticks great on DVDs, notebooks, glass jars.
