Aren’t journal prompts cheating?

Sometimes people feel like it’s “cheating” to use a journal prompt or somehow “not really journaling.”

This simply isn’t true!

Using writing prompts with your journaling practice is completely okay. You can use prompts to get your creative juices flowing, then free write on something else, or only answer the prompt. Either way is fine.

Writers frequently use writing prompts to practice their craft and warm up. If professional authors can use writing prompts, so can you!

A nice notebook makes so much of a difference when you’re journaling. You can journal on any scrap of paper or cheap notebook, but having a nice notebook makes you a lot more likely to actually sit down to write!

Bullet journal notebooks are popular for journaling, but I personally like spiral notebooks that lie flat. I also love using printable journal pages, like the ones included in this post, and just hole punch them and put them in a binder.

If you want to print the April journal, I recommend using bright this 32 lb paper. This is what I personally use because it’s sturdier, great for printing images, and feels smooth when you write on the page. Words seem to flow more easily when your pen moves easily, too. You can see a side by side comparison of several papers and cardstocks in this post on the best paper for planner printables.

If you want to add these journal pages to a planner, you can totally do that. Just print the pages to scale, hole punch them, and add them to your favorite planner system. I’ve already done the math for you:

Free printable April journal

For the best journaling experience, I recommend printing the pages on bright white 32# paper. It’s smooth to write on so your words can flow without scratchy, annoying paper. It resists feathering and bleeding, too, so any doodling, drawing, or lettering you do will look great. (Tired of junky pens? Discover the best pens for journaling in this post.)

If you’d like to see inside the journal, I created a flip through video for you to see every page:
