Printable coloring pages are so much fun. I think they’re even better than buying a printed coloring book. You don’t have to buy a whole new book (or wait out a meltdown) when your child decides they wanted to color the page a different way or wants to color their favorite page again. Just print a new copy!
It’s also easy to make your own Christmas cards with printable coloring pages. Print them four up (four to a page) for postcard style cards or print them as a “booklet,” trim, and fold. This is simple to do in Acrobat Reader, which is a free download if you don’t have it already. Just make sure your settings look like what your see below with “binding: left” selected so the cards print correctly.
For professional-feeling coloring pages that are fun to color, make sure to use a nicer paper (not whatever cheap feeling paper is in the printer at work). Remember that rough, yellow paper in your coloring books as a kid? It wasn’t much fun to color on, was it?
Cardstock is a good choice for making your own Christmas cards, but I use and recommend HP 32# paper for coloring pages. It’s the opposite of that yellow, see-through paper you didn’t like as a kid. It’s thicker and brighter than “regular” copy paper, which helps keep markers from feathering. The paper also feels smoother, so pencils and crayons glide and color smoothly on it. For a side-by-side comparison of printables on various papers, please see this post looking at the best paper for printables.
- Made in USA: HP Papers is sourced from renewable forest resources and has achieved production with 0% deforestation in North America.
- Heavyweight premium printing: HP Premium32 is a heavyweight (32 pounds), brighter (100 bright) and whiter (163 whiteness) paper with a super-smooth...

Our family’s favorite budget markers (that actually work) are Crayola Supertips. They’re a bargain and fun for adults and children. The fine tip makes them better than many other markers for coloring details. Because there are dozens of shades, they’re great for colorful Christmas pages.
Prismacolors are my top choice for colored pencils. Even the more budget lines of Prismacolor colored pencils are softer and creamier than brands like Crayola. Prismacolors color easily and are great for blending. A colorless Prismacolor blending pencil is the perfect tool for the job if you want to start blending colored pencils.
- Soft, thick cores are perfect for shading and shadows
- Ultra-smooth, even color laydown
- Lightfast, richly saturated pigments
Gel pens are a fun way to add sparkle to these holiday coloring pages. The “juicier” pens, like Gelly Roll, are perfect for blending to create stunning designs. Discover the best gel pens for coloring in this post.
If you don’t have time to read the whole post about gel pens, theshort version is Sakura Gelly roll pens are great for coloring. The Tanmit pens shown below are a solid budget pick that actually colors fairly well. (Many cheaper gel pens are scratchy and difficult/annoying to color with.)
